The Strangers
The Strangers doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it do anything particularly unique with its set-up. What it does do however, is establish itself as a very solid home invasion movie. The story centers on a couple returning from a wedding reception, shacked up in a vacation house for the night. When three strangers show up in the middle of the night, what ensues is a fight for survival.
I Know What You Did Last Summer
I Know What You Did Last Summer follows the conventional route so many slasher movies before it have taken. A group of teens are stalked by a hook-wielding maniac and begin getting killed off one at a time. All of this stems from an accident that occurs at the beginning of this living nightmare where the group run over an innocent man and dump the dead body in a nearby lake. When threatening notes show up some time later, it’s clear someone knows what happened and is dead-set on revenge. The story is pretty basic in truth, although the mystery is enticing enough to keep watching until the end.
You’re Next
If you’re looking for a gory thriller with a lot of twists and turns, You’re Next should definitely be on your radar. The story begins with a family reunion which turns into a full-on massacre when a gang of masked killers invade a sprawling mansion in the middle of the country. On a ruthless mission of murder, the group bite off more than they can chew when they realize one of the group has a talent for fighting back — violently. Cleverly written and with a sharp eye for detail, this one’s well worth a watch.
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The series that spawned a whole host of kids afraid to sleep. A Nightmare on Elm Street is the film that started it all – and it still holds up to this day. For those unaware, A Nightmare on Elm Street revolves around the monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer called Freddy Kreuger. In order to exact his revenge, he invades the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his death. Can the kids figure out how to stop him before it’s too late? With a host of imaginative and gruesome deaths, memorable one-liners and dream sequences, the original film is a true horror classic.
Scream
The quintessential teen slasher; Scream is a meta horror movie that not only pokes fun at its own genre, it does so by unironically introducing one of the most memorable killers in slasher history – Ghostface. The story picks up a year after Sidney’s Mother has passed away. Along with her friends, Sidney begins experiencing strange calls from a crazed serial killer. Dressed in a white mask and a large black robe, this mysterious figure is out for revenge and uses phone calls to antagonize the group. As the movie progresses, more of the past is revealed which leads to some really memorable and tense segments. While the sequels end up with varying degrees of quality, the original is undoubtedly a great watch.
Valentine
Valentine is another slasher but this time changes the time of year from the conventional Halloween to Valentine’s Day instead. This deliciously dark slasher has a pretty decent cast and a pretty menacing killer too. The story itself is typical slasher fare, revolving around five women who are stalked by an unknown assailant while preparing for Valentine’s Day. Combining suspense, tension and gore, Valentine is a heck of a good time and certainly worth checking out.
Friday the 13th
Friday The 13th was absolutely decimated by critics when it released back in 1980. This slasher infamously became synonymous with Jason Vorhees, the hockey-mask wearing killer exacting revenge at Camp Crystal Lake. There have been many Jason movies over the years but the original remains one of the best. For those unaware, the story takes place at a summer camp in 1980, years after tragedy befell the place thanks to a young Jason Voorhees drowning. Now out to exact revenge, the killings start again, plunging the campers and camp counselors into a bloody nightmare. This one’s a must-watch!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Along with Friday The 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is another straightforward slasher that’s gone on to become a cult classic. Unlike 13th though, Chainsaw Massacre was actually praised by critics at the time of its release. For those unaware, the movie revolves around five friends who head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way though they stumble upon a deserted house, discovering that something horrific lurks within. Raw, visceral and at times surprisingly tense, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a solid slasher worth checking out.
Black Christmas
Black Christmas is a solid horror film, this time switching the holiday season from overused Halloween across to Christmas. The story is quite straightforward; a group of sorority sisters find themselves stalked by a maniac. While it doesn’t sound like much, this 1973 picture was overlooked at the time and feels like a forgotten classic. The film is undeniably creepy too and has enough suspense to keep you gripped until the very end.
April Fools Day
If you’re looking for another twist on the holiday slasher formula, look no further than April Fools Day. While the movie doesn’t have a lot of scares, it does have some decent acting and a pretty solid screenplay. The story revolves around nine college students staying at a remote island mansion. Unfortunately they begin to fall prey to an unseen murderer over the April Fool’s Day weekend. It’s not perfect but its unique twist makes it a worthy slasher to check out.
