Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a classic anime from the 90s’ heavily praised for its in-depth character development, satisfying soundtrack, and unconventional storytelling. By featuring epic Kaiju battles and dynamic characters, many will find similarities with Attack on Titan. However, Neon Genesis Evangelion isn’t as action-heavy as Attack On Titan. While the anime has some action, it delves deeper into psychological matters regarding mental illness and diverging views. The story follows a firm leader named Gendo Ikari, who forces his son, Shinji, and others to pilot giant robots called Evangelion to fight the deadly Angel threat. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

If Eren’s Titan roar had you shaking in excitement, wait until you see the might of Simon’s drill in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. With its over-the-top animation and energetic main cast, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann will deliver new viewers an experience of epic proportions. Although Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann feels more humorous than Attack On Titan, it’s not afraid to show its darker side when the plot calls for it. Especially regarding its characters’ internal struggles and their quest to redeem their freedom from a higher power. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann follows Simon and his friend Kamina’s adventure outside of their underground civilization thanks to Simon’s discovery of an abandoned mech called Lagann. With this powerful unit at their side, they fight to reclaim this new world from evil tyrants. Sitting through the anime’s 27 episodes may seem like a task, but the show will leave an everlasting impact that’ll make the time spent watching it feel rewarding.
Hunter X Hunter (2011)
Similarities – Violence & Unique Worlds
Although Hunter X Hunter looks innocent, it contains violence, drama, and thrills on par with Attack On Titan. From its well-written and imaginative story arcs to its distinct character cast, it’ll leave many cravings for more content. Hunter X Hunter will feel more lighthearted and adventurous at times due to its protagonist Gon Freecss having brighter goals, unlike Eren. The story revolves around Gon exploring the world in search of his father and aiming to become a professional hunter, similar to his father. Yet, the hunter world contains many mysterious creatures, notorious killers, and situations that Gon must overcome. It also introduces unique superpowers called Nen, adding to the world’s originality. Like Attack On Titan, Hunter X Hunter’s a darker shonen that will excite, depress, surprise you.
Death Note
Similarities – Mystery & Dark Setting
Death Note was a hit with fans during the mid-2000s era of anime and is still many folks’ favorite mystery anime to this day. With its engaging plot twists, well-developed characters, and gloomy aesthetic, Death Note is a worthy watch for fans of Attack On Titan. It’s important to note that Death Note won’t contain much physical violence like Attack On Titan. Nevertheless, Death Note’s dangerous world and major antagonist, Light Yagami, will erase fans’ fear of a less thrilling ride. The story follows a boy named Light Yagami who comes across a supernatural book called Death Note and a terrifying shinigami named Ryuk. Light discovers he can kill many with ease through the Death Note. Under the alias, Kira, Light wants to purge the world of all criminals. Before that, he’ll have to go toe to toe with a detective named L. The thrills and chills aside, Death Note will undoubtedly leave an impression on you. Made In Abyss
Similarities – Dark Fantasy & Mystery
If the dark, mysterious world of Attack On Titan captivated you, Made In Abyss will fulfill those hopes. It blends heavy gore, terrifying monsters, and layers of suspense exceptionally well and should provide Attack On Titan fans with a similar experience. That’s not to say fans should expect it to be a carbon copy of Attack On Titan. Made In Abyss feels more in line with an open-world RPG. While the anime emphasizes its characters and their goals, it encourages viewers to consider the very nature of the abyss. The story follows a young girl named Riko and her robot friend Reg’s journey down the abyss in hopes of helping Reg recover his memories. They soon discover that this mission will be more challenging than they anticipated. Mystery, sorrow, and pinches of joy await those who wish to view Riko and Reg’s journey down the abyss.
Blue Gender
Similarities – Characters Vs Nature
Blue Gender isn’t among the most well-known anime out there, but it’s the closest to Attack On Titan. Blue Gender follows a male protagonist struggling to survive in a world where alien insects rule over humans. Like Attack On Titan, he must team up with other humans to reclaim their freedom and authority. While the anime isn’t as gorgeous as Attack On Titan, it manages to pull off mind-numbing death scenes well. It’s a series that will satisfy those who crave action, drama, and mature themes.
Shiki
Similarities – Gore & Tragedy
Many argue that Shiki is one of the best horror anime. It is more in line with an old-fashioned and horrifying interpretation of vampires. In essence, Shiki is more about drama, misery, and gore than romance. Shiki follows doctor Toshio Ozaki whose investigating the mysterious deaths occurring in his homeland. Ozaki, accompanied by Natsuno Yuuki, discovers that the Shiki is behind these murders. He aims to bring them to justice. Shiki’s brutality can be downright terrifying and on par with the murders committed by Attack On Titan’s Titans. If you’re looking for an anime with mystery, twists, and thrills, Shiki’s worth watching.
Parasyte: The Maxim
Similarities – Violence & Characters
Parasyte: The Maxim is a well-written action and horror-packed series following a boy named Shinichi Izumi and his hand-infested alien parasite companion, Migi. Specifically, Migi’s species plans to take over the world by entering the brains of humans. It’s up to Shinji and Migi to stop them. As with Attack On Titan, Parasyte’s characters are well-developed and showcase realistic signs of fear and disgust toward the parasites. Parasyte’s world also contains a nice chunk of mystery mixed with incredible fight scenes for action enthusiasts. The biggest takeaway from the series is humanizing Migi’s character every episode. Berserk
Similarities – Bloodshed & Revenge
While Attack On Titan’s ruthlessness left a permanent mark on many who’ve viewed it, Berserk takes it to a higher level. With its well-developed cast, highly crafted storytelling, and its position on dark themes involving fate, vengeance, and love, there’s a lot to explore with Berserk. The story follows Guts, a young mercenary who gets inducted into a powerful syndicate called the Band of Hawks, thanks to its leader Griffith. Then years pass, and Guts becomes a commander and helps Griffith claim victory in every battle they endure. Unbeknownst to Guts, evil lurks in the shadows, and it’s soon to change his life for the worse. Similarly, Attack On Titan and Berserk fights are gruesome and carry heavy messages. Berserk also positions its characters at the forefront by placing them in tight scenarios that hurt them mentally and physically. Some may turn away from Berserk’s overwhelming gore and old-fashioned animation. Nevertheless, its story will surprise many and have viewers hooked to see what happens next.
