Knights of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya)
Saint Seiya (the original, not the ghastly CGI remake) follows a group of young warriors who are guarded by a different constellation and set out to protect the Goddess Athena (and humanity) from evil. The main character here is Seiya who’s raised in an orphanage in Athena before joining the cause. The entire anime is dripping in Greek mythology, while the action comes thick and fast throughout. This 1986 animation still stands up to this day, making for an enthralling watch and boasting over 100 episodes to get through.
Attack On Titan
Similarities – Giant Monsters & Action
Attack On Titan is an anime that features a nightmarish, post-apocalyptic vision of the future. Humanity are held up in little pockets of refuge across the globe, clinging to the last shreds of existence before being wiped out completely. Outside these small walls stand numerous behemoths known as titans, which threaten to destroy the humans at any moment. At the center of this conflict lies young Eren Jaegar who has hopeful aspirations of joining the military and helping with this ongoing fight. What begins as a simple tale soon evolves into an incredibly engaging, tightly-written series that changes the game midway through the first season and continues to do so throughout its run-time. Well written, nicely animated and with lots of content to chew through, this anime is certainly well worth a watch. You can read our thoughts on Attack On Titan in our full season reviews here!
Sword Gai
Similarities – Lore & World-Building
Swordgai is an interesting but flawed anime based on the manga of the same name. The concept and world building are by far the big highlights here and if that’s your jam then you can’t go wrong with Sword Gai. However, aside from a couple of characters, most are largely forgettable, including bland protagonist Gai. The action does go some way to disguise this lack of depth but it does dampen the prospects of this one a bit. While this isn’t exactly a glowing recommendation, Sword Gai does have some stand-out moments making for a relatively enjoyable watch. Devilman Crybaby
Similarities – Tone & Demons
Devilman: Crybaby is arguably one of the more controversial and interesting animes to be released in 2018. The unique blend of violence, sexually charged imagery and breathtaking, hedonistic art makes it a fascinating but largely divisive animated title. The story begins much like other animes. An ordinary boy, Akira, is changed forever when he attends a strange party with his friend Ryo and merges with a devil to fight the forces of evil. Acting as a hybrid devil/human, Akira spends his time outside school hunting demons to protect humanity from their scourge that threatens to destroy the world. It’s a simple story but one that’s told really well, bearing some similarities to Blood Of Zeus with its otherworldly beings. Castlevania
Similarities – Story & Deep World-Building
Based on the popular video game of the same name, Castlevania is one of those rare exceptions to the rule that all video game adaptations are inherently bad. In fact, Castlevania is not only a well written tale about vampires VS humans, it’s an incredibly endearing anime that just gets better and better as the seasons tick by. Season 3 in particular is on course to being one of the best shows of 2020. The basic premise revolves around an enraged Dracula unleashing hordes of demonic, blood thirsty creatures onto the town of Wallachia. When he does, it’s up to anti-hero Belmont to stop them. This forms the crux of the first season (which spans for a disappointing 4 episodes) before branching out and becoming much more intriguing as the seasons tick by. If you’re in the mood for something mirroring Blood Of Zeus’s deep characters and intriguing world building, this one is definitely worth checking out. Sirius the Jaegar
Similarities – Humanity Fighting Demons & Story
At first glance, Sirius The Jaegar doesn’t have much in common with Blood Of Zeus. However, the bubbling conflict growing between vampires and humans bears some similarities to the main plot line of Netflix’s alt-Greek anime. At the heart of this conflict is wildcard Yuliy, a young man who happens to possess mysterious powers akin to that of a werewolf. It soon becomes apparent that he holds the key to an artifact the vampires are tirelessly hunting, The Ark Of Sirius. What follows is a race against time as Yuliy sets out to stop the vamps, resolve a personal vendetta with his brother and save the world. It’s all pretty standard anime fare but it’s a well written series and certainly worth checking out. You can read our thoughts on Sirius The Jaegar in our full season reviews here!
Hercules: The Animated Series
Similarities – Ancient Greece
If you’re in the mood for something a little more Greek-inspired, look no further than Hercules: The Animated Series. Serving as a spin-off to the movie, Disney’s series follows Hercules’ many labors during the years he spent training how to be a hero under Phil. There’s some cameo appearances from familiar faces in the movie and a good amount of drama too. There’s some funny moments in here and while the episodes are a little predictable, the voice cast on-board with this one are great. This is probably the closest you’ll get to an animation matching Blood Of Zeus’ Greek influences.
Kamigami No Asobi (Mischief Of The Gods)
Similarities – Gods & Ancient Greece
Kamigami No Asobi is an interesting series leaning heavily on themes of bromance and revolving around five Gods who each have a problem them need solving. The assistance comes in the form of third-year high school student Yui Kusanagi, who finds herself suddenly transported to a different world. While exploring her new surroundings, she eventually comes face to face with Zeus: the king of the gods. I won’t divulge more but across 12 episodes, this anime is dripping in gorgeous hand-drawn animation and has a refreshing perspective on romance. In terms of mythology and dabbling in the affairs of the Gods, this one is certainly worth checking out.
Campione!
Similarities – Ancient Greece & Action
Casmpione is an interesting little anime that wastes absolutely no time getting right to the heart of the action. While confusing to begin with, the story soon reveals more puzzle pieces over time to make for a fascinating and compelling animated flick. The main protagonist here is 16 year old Gogou Kusanagi. After defeating the God of War in mortal combat, he’s bestowed the coveted title of Campione (see: God Slayer) and given the duty of fighting Heretical Gods whenever they appear. The characters are entertaining and this story nicely paced, making for an action-packed romp well worth checking out.
The Greeks
Similarities – Ancient Greece
If you’re looking for something that deep dives into the world of the Greek people and mythology, this docu-mini series is certainly worth checking out. While it’s not an animation like the other choices in this list, if you’re itching for more of a factual account of the Greek people, it may be worth giving this one a watch. Split across 3 hour-long episodes, The Greeks deep dives into every aspect of Greek life including the Olympic games, art, architecture and more. It’s incredibly educational and manages to do well to keep you invested across its run-time. So there we have it, our 10 TV show picks to check out when you’re done watching Blood Of Zeus.
