Essentially the five episodes focus on Demjanjuk’s court trial, with lots of archival footage and drama to boot. While a little more straight forward than Night Stalker, this one is just as gripping.
Mindhunter
Similarities – Serial Killers
In terms of what you’d want from a crime thriller, Mindhunter ticks all the right boxes. Smartly written, brilliantly acted and technically sound, Mindhunter is a rare breed of TV show and certainly a must-watch. The concept here is simple. Set in the late 1970s, two FBI agents are tasked with interviewing serial killers to solve open cases. This unique concept helps pave way for some unnerving dialogue and a really gripping story across the show’s two seasons. With a third season still unknown right now, Mindhunter has enough to enjoy with its two seasons to make it essential viewing for true crime fans. Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Combining archival footage, interviews and never-before-heard audio, Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes is a shocking, absorbing true crime series revolving around Ted Bundy. Instead of focusing on the charismatic, charming man he convinced people he was, this documentary is much more interested in the gritty, ugly realism around his story. The four hour run time makes this an easily digestible series too, one that mixes a complicated string of murders with a simple production style to great effect. The Ripper
Similarities – Serial Killers & Shocking Case
On the 30th October 1975, West Yorkshire Police were thrown into one of the largest and most expensive manhunts in British History. Dubbed “The Ripper”, Peter Sutcliffe went on to murder 13 women and attempted to murder 7 others between 1975 and 1981. With the police force in disarray and attitudes of the people quickly turning hostile, The Ripper dives right into the heart of this investigation, delivering an engrossing 4 part docu-series in the process. For true crime enthusiasts, The Ripper is another well-written and engrossing Netflix series examining a notorious case that plagued the North of England in the 70’s. The Pharmacist
Similarities – Hunting A Killer
More than half a million Americans died from drug overdoses between 2000 and 2015 – and more than half of those involved opioids. On the back of Hasan Minhaj’s damning investigative piece on Fentanyl, Netflix return for a four-part documentary series that exposes all of this in its rawest form from the most unlikely of sources; a middle-aged pharmacist named Dan Schneider. With the police uninterested, writing Dan’s son off as “just another junkie murder”, a grief-stricken Father launches a crusade to try and find out who murdered his son. Jumping head-first into the lion’s den, the truth is far more shocking and surprising than you can imagine, as twists and turns lead Dan to expose the truth. Manhunt: Unabomber
Similarities – Hunting A Killer
Based on true events, Manhunt: Unabomber blurs the line between fact and fiction in this dramatized reconstruction of the Unabomber case in 1995. Although it suffers from unnecessary padding in the middle episodes, Manhunt is a decent show sprinkled with some excellent acting. The show has a solid pacing too, producing an enthralling, binge-worthy show about the notorious postal bomb killer. Informative and surprisingly realistic in the way it depicts investigative work, Manhunt: Unabomber should be a hit with true crime fans. Extraordinary, shocking and visually unique, the three episode run-time perfectly captures this case in all its glory. Killer Inside: The Mind Of Aaron Hernandez

New England Patriot star Aaron Hernandez was a man living a double life. Behind the fame and accolades Hernandez achieved on the football pitch, a much darker side to this troubled young man was brewing. In true Netflix fashion, this grimy underbelly is put under the true crime spotlight in a three-part documentary series. Split across hour-long episodes, Killer Inside is a fascinating and chilling tale of a sport star seemingly destined to snap from the very beginning. With a good pacing and plenty of bone-chilling details revealed across the season, Killer Inside extends beyond its case to ask some damning questions about CTE. Evil Genius
Similarities – Shocking Case
Split across four informative parts, Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist is an in-depth true-crime documentary series exploring the infamous Pizza Bomber Heist in America. For those outside the US this is likely to be a relatively unknown story and the incredulous way this tale unravels raises a lot of questions early on. Those more familiar with the story will still find interest here too though, as the series combines archival footage, interview segments and mainstream news reporting with never-before-seen footage to help piece together the bizarre mystery that gripped America for years. The ending is every bit as shocking and satisfying as one may expect, bringing another truly engrossing and absorbing series to Netflix. Making A Murderer
Similarities – Questionable Case & Corrupt Police
The Granddaddy of them all; Making A Murderer made serious waves in the true crime documentary scene when it dropped on Netflix in 2015. The emotional outpouring of support and contradiction toward this serialized documentary essentially paved way for a new line of questions to be asked surrounding law enforcement. While the documentary does noticeably omit some important details surrounding the case, it undeniably shows the level of corruption within certain parts of the police force. Filmed over a 10-year period, that corruption weighs heavy on the shoulders of Steven Avery, a DNA exoneree who, while in the midst of exposing corruption in local law enforcement, finds himself the prime suspect in a grisly new crime.
