Humans
Similarities – Androids
While the idea of androids becoming sentient is nothing new in the world of science fiction, Channel 4’s series Humans takes that concept, adds some thematically sound, though provocative questions and a diverse range of characters to produce a surprisingly compelling series. Running for three seasons, Humans is a well written thriller that asks some big questions around what it would actually be like to live alongside robots. When those same androids then gain sentience, would we be able to handle it? With an evolving plot over time, Humans is both far-reaching and surprisingly grounded, delivering a decent slice of sci-fi. You can read our thoughts on Humans in our full season reviews here!
The Third Day
Similarities – Religion & Mystery
The Third Day is a fascinating drama that has a lot of symbolism dotted throughout its 6 episode run. While a little short, the mystery is compelling enough to really lean into the creepy atmosphere. This is really where the show is at its best. The story revolves around a man and a woman making separate journeys to a mysterious island off the British coast. To give much more away would be a disservice to this show but it certainly grows and evolves over time into something really special. The tone is fantastic and the uneasiness really feeds into the acting, which is quite simply fantastic. You can read our thoughts on The Third Day in our episode reviews here!
Lost
Similarities – Religion & Mystery
Back in 2004, a tiny show called Lost went way over-budget with its pilot episode. The consequences of that saw several people fired. Little did they know this mishap would help grow Lost into a worldwide phenomenon that completely changed the way people watched TV. This highly engrossing, mystery series revolves around a group of plane-crash survivors washing up on shore and fighting for survival on a very weird island holding many, many secrets. Across 7 seasons the show does lose its way a little late on but my gosh what an engrossing and unmissable journey it is. If you haven’t seen it already, Lost is a must-watch show.
Devs
Similarities – Technology & A Haunting Score
Produced by Alex Garland, Devs revolves around a girl called Lily working at the tech company Amaya. When her boyfriend Sergei is invited to join the top secret branch of Amaya known as Devs, everything changes. Unfortunately Sergei stumbles onto something he shouldn’t and his disappearance sparks some big questions which Lily aims to answer. While the story is a little overlong and sags in the middle, the thought provoking questions about the future and “tram lines” are certainly engaging enough to watch through. There’s also an incredible musical score attached to this that’s easily one of the big highlights of the show. You can read our thoughts on Devs in our full season reviews here!
Better Than Us
Similarities – Androids
Although not quite as endearing as Humans, Better Than Us is a 2-season drama revolving around a family on the brink of splitting up. Backdropping this familial drama, set deep in the heart of 2029, is a narrative where robots have become an ordinary part of human life. However, a rebel group intend to put a stop to this before robots take over every aspect of our lives. Blending elements of thriller and espionage together, Better Than Us certainly grows into its role with the later episodes delivering some great drama. Vikings
Similarities – Ragnar Lothbrok
Following the journey of Ragnar Lothbrok, Vikings is a fascinating and often violent look into the lives of the first Norsemen in history. Full of dramatic tension and leaning (mostly) toward historical accuracy, Vikings does a great job blending fact and fiction. In doing so, it produces a methodically paced, interesting journey through the lives of the infamous warriors of the North. While the later seasons do take some liberties with that realism and the plot runs out of steam before its final season, there’s enough here to enjoy nonetheless. Really though, fans of Travis Fimmel’s portrayal of Marcus in Raised by Wolves will be right at home with this one. You can read our thoughts on Vikings in our full season review here!
Westworld
Similarities – Thought Provoking Questions & Androids
While the later seasons do become too complicated and convoluted for its own good, season 1 of Westworld is near perfection on the small screen. It’s a show that balances some stunning performances and themes with a heavy dose of sci-fi and morality. There’s plenty of theories and allure surrounding this first season and Anthony Hopkins is phenomenal in his position. Not to discredit the later seasons, Westworld’s first is certainly a must-watch and the later seasons do enough to maintain an air of mystery and drama. The Leftovers
Similarities – Mystery, Tone & Themes
If thematic depth is your jam, The Leftovers is definitely worth checking out. Running for three seasons, the story picks up just after a global event called the “Sudden Departure”. This inexplicable event sees the disappearance of 140 million people – or 2% of the world’s population to be precise. Following that, mainstream religions decline which paves way for a number of cults to emerge. The most notable among them is the Guilty Remnant. The story picks up from here and only grows more intriguing and interesting over time. To give much more away would be a disservice to the series but if you haven’t already, The Leftovers is a must-watch.
The OA
Similarities – Sci-Fi & Tone
The OA’s recent cancellation caused quite the stir online. That should tell you all you need to know about the loyal fan-base rallying around this one. And for good reason too. The OA is undeniably weird and its mystery does so well to keep you glued to find out what happens next. The main story revolves around a missing blind girl called Prairie returning home. Now in her twenties, she suddenly has her sight restored and no one can explain why. It’s a weird, atmospheric and moody drama with just enough sci-fi to keep you watching. However, it does end with quite the cliffhanger. With no more episodes, this could be a deal-breaker for some. You can read our thoughts on The OA in our full season reviews here!
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Similarities – Thought Provoking questions & Debates
Star Trek: The Next Generation is quite simply one of the best sci-fi shows ever created. The forward thinking ideologies and concepts show that you don’t need explosions and action to drive a narrative forward. The fascinating debates and thought provoking questions raised in The Next Generation were way ahead of its time and ultimately what makes this show stand the test of time Yes there’s still some dud episodes along the way, and many people remember the epic Borg arc, but the show as a whole stands the test of time as one of the quintessential slices of science fiction. If you haven’t already, you should definitely give this one a watch. So there we have it, our 10 TV show picks to keep you busy while you await the second season of Raised By Wolves.
