Rebelde is a 2022 remake of the original 2004 hit Telenovela in Mexico. Mixing teen drama with music, Rebelde is a sure-fire guilty pleasure. Rebelde
Similarities – This is the original!
This one’s probably an obvious choice but a necessary one nonetheless. If you enjoyed the reboot of Rebelde, what better place to pick up another binge-watch than the original show. The story here is mostly the same, with six teenagers sporting different lives and personalities attending a prominent private school. They each have a passion for music, but across the episodes find friendship, feuds and fights aplenty. With each season stretching on for 100+ episodes, this one is likely to keep you busy for a very long time!
Do You Like Brahms?
Similarities – Music School
Set in a music university and following a group of aspiring (and seasoned) musicians, Do You Like Brahms revolves around two different characters from very different walks of life. Song-A who finds herself hopeful to become a violin major amongst stiff competition. Thrown out of an early performance for being the least talented, Song-A struggles to be heard and seen. However, talented pianist Joon-Young is one such person who does see her. He takes a fancy to this young player and tries to help her become better. Along the way there’s plenty of romance, drama and heartache between them as the pair find themselves caught up in a whirlwind will they/won’t they romance.
Baby
Similarities – Rebellious teenagers
Loosely inspired by a true story, Baby is an Italian series that revolves around a group of Roman high schoolers. Specifically, we hone in on Parioli teens as they defy society in search of identity and independence. It’s typical teen drama fodder, and in a way is quite tropey – which should suit fans of series like Elite and Rebelde, hence its inclusion here! The story centers on student athlete Chiara who forges an unlikely bond with rebellious classmate Ludovica, and mysterious new boy, Damiano. Across the three seasons their tale unwinds in suitably dramatic and enticing ways.
Euphoria
Similarities – Teen melodrama
HBO’s stylish teen-drama Euphoria is a visually striking and boundary-pushing show. It accurately depicts how destructive drugs can be and spins that into a gorgeously shot series about a group of teens dealing with teenage issues. Zendaya ignites the show with her accurate portrayal of drug-addict Rue but each of the different teens bring something new to the show. There’s some very important topics discussed here too and against the backdrop of drug taking, nudity and rape, this teen drama is easily one of the best dramas of its kind and a must-watch, even for those who don’t usually watch these sort of shows. Pretty Little Liars
Similarities – Teen Issues & Mystery
Pretty Little Liars revolves around four friends who are stalked by an anonymous foe who reveals their darkest secrets. If that wasn’t enough, this quartet also work together to investigate the disappearance of their best friend; the Queen Bee of the group, Allison. What begins as a simple mystery soon become so much more as twists and turns keep things suspenseful. There’s an element of Gossip Girl in here too but what keeps this one so interesting stems from finding out who “A” is and what these girls may be hiding from each other. It can be a little slow moving at times but if you’re a fan of teen dramas then this one is worth sticking with for the long haul.
Elite
Similarities – High School Drama & Mystery
The story begins at the end of our story; a murder has taken place and a police detective begins interviewing visibly shocked teenagers that could have committed the crime. It’s a bold opening and one that manages to grip you immediately. This murder mystery hook expands out across the entirety of this highly engrossing show, which takes place in an illustrious private school known as Las Encinas. When Book smart Nadia, shy but level-headed Samuel and brash Nano arrive to shake things up, Las Encinas will never be the same again. If you’re looking for compelling murder mystery vibes with an eclectic group of characters, this one’s definitely worth checking out.
13 Reasons Why
Similarities – Mystery & Teen Drama
Much like the agony felt by lead protagonist Clay through these heart-wrenching seasons, watching 13 Reasons Why is quite the conflicting experience. The story itself is simple enough – 17 year old high school student Hannah Baker takes her own life. With the school shocked and mourning her death, 13 tapes are left behind, recorded by Hannah herself, detailing the events leading up to her death and who’s ultimately responsible for it. The follow-up seasons then dive deeper into this mystery, with extra layers of drama added to spice things up.
Control Z
Similarities – Social Media & Drama
Netflix’s teen drama Control Z effectively wraps up a cyber mystery wrapped up in high school politics, hierarchical character drama and a simple but effective mystery hook. The story itself revolves around outcast Sofia. She teams up with new boy Javier, intent on tracking down the identity of a hacker known as @allyoursecrets, who makes their presence felt across campus. As more secrets about other students begin to spill out, Sofia and Javier form an unlikely team and try to work out who the hacker is.
Grand Army
Similarities – Teen drama
Grand Army begins with a bang – quite literally. Grand Army High School and its various colourful characters therein are thrown into lockdown thanks to a bomb blast several blocks over. Heralded as the worst terrorist attack since 9/11, the teens caught up in this deal with the aftermath of the attack while grappling with the gravitas of their own problems. Much like Euphoria and other teen dramas of its kind, Grand Army does not shy away from big issues. Some of these problems do feel a little on-the-nose but for the most part are actually handled quite well. The diverse cast at the center of all this drama have their own subplots and the story develops nicely across the space of its 9 episode season. Get Even
Similarities – Mystery & Teen Drama
With a distinct teen slant and a compelling hook, Get Even is a pretty engrossing and well written mystery. While it still features the same array of tropes you’d expect, they’re handled well alongside the murder mystery which takes centre stage. Within the school grounds, four students from very different walks of life join forces to form the group DGM (Don’t Get Mad), exposing those who get away with injustices. With pacey 30 minute episodes, Get Even i good value for its run-time, and feels like a mash-up of fellow Netflix teen dramas Elite and Control Z.
