See

Similarities – Cinematography & Action

See stumbles blindly across its fantasy landscape to deliver a story of equal highs and lows. At the heart of this one lies village chief Baba Voss. In this near-future world, a virus has ravaged the world’s population, wiping out 99% of humanity and rendering the other 1% blind. When Maghra, Baba Voss’ partner, gives birth to sighted twins, what follows is a journey across the American landscape to find the prophetic Jerlamarel in a bid to make sense of what’s happening. To complicate matters, the mad Queen Kane, drunk on power, sends her right-hand man The Witchfinder General, out to mercilessly hunt the group. As the season progresses, the story unfolds and brings with it some questionable elements surrounding the way this world has been set-up, culminating in a rather clumsy ending. Having said that, the world itself looks gorgeous and the action is absolutely brutal. The world building is a little messy and light on details at times (similar to Tribes Of Europa) but there’s undoubtedly a lot of similarities between the two shows. Arthdal Chronicles

Similarities – Characters & Storyline

Dubbed as the Korean Game Of Thrones, Arthdal Chronicles leans much heavier into its high fantasy concepts and mixes that in with a health dose of complicated political drama. The story is admittedly pretty convoluted and will punish you if you’re not paying attention during every minute of its episodes. Set in the fictional land of Arthdal during Ancient times, the story sees a military force led by Tagon rise up and seize control of the land. Prophesied to bring balance back to the world, Eunseom and Tanya front the Wahan Tribe, a peaceful colony, find themselves on the brink of extinction. All of this builds up to quite the dramatic conclusion to round things out with. Given a second season has already been green-lit, this isn’t the last we’ll see of this Korean drama! The 3%

Similarities – Characters & Tribes

Featuring a bleak, dystopian future and a Hunger Games-esque premise, Netflix’s first Brazilian show could be mistaken for simply playing copycat with what’s come before. However, The 3% is not one to miss. With a conclusive four-season arc, there’s no danger of this one being left incomplete and the blend of mystery and sci-fi elements are definitely worth watching. The story takes place in a bleak vision of Brazil in the future, with the world divided between those who have and those who have not. The 3% refer to the lucky few isolated away from the ravaged mainland and living in paradise. The rest of the people live in squalor, fighting to survive. Every year a competition begins to choose 2 lucky people to join those elite numbers. Only, they’ll have to run the gauntlet first. With a rebel force operating in the shadows and lots of interesting ideas about class divides, 3% touches on some intriguing themes after a relatively tepid first season, making for quite an absorbing watch. The 100

Similarities – Tribes & Fight For Survival

The 100 is set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization. A spaceship housing humanity’s lone survivors happens to be humanity’s last hope for survival. With that in mind, 100 juvenile delinquents are thrown back to Earth, crash landing in the hopes of re-populating the planet. There’s a teen-drama affair with this one, featuring plenty of relationship issues and a suitably campy tone through much of its run-time. This is definitely one worth sticking with though and after a relatively wobbly first season, The 100 starts to find itself a lot more. With 7 seasons to get through and lots of drama along the way, this one should keep you very busy.

The Witcher

Similarities – Fantasy & Storyline

The Witcher is not without its flaws but it’s hard to discredit what a satisfying and well written slice of high-fantasy this is. There’s certainly enough magic, monsters and sword-fighting to keep things rooted in danger, while doing the video game it’s based on justice. For those unaware, the story here revolves around a monster hunter named Geralt. Vilified by human-kind, these white-haired, emotionless Witchers spend their time hunting creatures and getting paid to do so. Geralt is joined on this hunt by Ciri, a princess in a neighbouring city and a mage-in-training named Yennefer. Across this first season, the show balances investigative work with monster slaying really well, which should satisfy those looking to scratch that high fantasy itch. His Dark Materials

Similarities – Prophecy & Magical McGuffin

His Dark Materials is a wonderful fantasy series. Excellent acting and a faithful story adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novels combine beautifully with the world building on offer, making for a wholly absorbing and satisfying watch. The show never outstays its welcome either across its three seasons. The story follows the journey of Lyra Belacqua, a young girl who inhabits a world where human and daemon share an intricate link together. As kids start going missed, snatched up from the streets by the Gobblers, Lyra finds herself coming in possession of the mysterious alethiometer. When her best friend Roger goes missing, what begins as a simple search and rescue mission quickly becomes so much more as this expansive, dangerous and wondrous show becomes one of the small screen’s best fantasy offerings. The Expanse

Similarities – Tribes & Politics

When it comes to world-building, The Expanse is unrivaled. The show offers up a glimpse of a possible future where mankind has extended its reach beyond Earth to inhabit Mars and the surrounding asteroid belt. With the story jumping between Earth, Mars and the Belt, some clever editing and a good attention to detail keeps the tension ticking away between the different characters. When that tension spills over into action, it brings with it one heck of a seismic shift. To give much more away would be a disservice to this show but suffice to say The Expanse is one of the best sci-fi series out there and a must-watch. The Rain

The Rain is a decent, albeit somewhat underwhelming post-apocalyptic series. The premise is fascinating though and there’s an undeniable charm with this to keep you watching through to see the end. The story begins at breakneck speed. Siblings Rasmus and Simone find their world turned upside down when their father snatches them up from school and urgently tells them there’s a deadly virus lurking in the clouds that will wipe out the population when it starts raining. Taking refuge in an underground bunker and left alone for 6 years, the children grow to become teenagers and decide to venture out into the new post apocalyptic world, intent on tracking down their Father. The Rain’s concept and world building are generally very good although amusingly for a country that has over 170 days of rainfall, there’s a surprising lack of rain throughout the 3 seasons. Still, this is one of the rare Netflix Originals that actually does have a conclusive ending. Although it’s not always the strongest post apocalyptic effort, it should whet the appetite for those who enjoyed Tribes of Europa. Falling Skies

Similarities – Action

Falling Skies is basically The Walking Dead with aliens. The tribal ideas and banding together are pretty similar to Tribes of Europa, while the distant, looming threat has more than a few similarities to Netflix’s latest German fantasy series. There’s plenty of drama, action and tense segments interspersed across the five seasons but do be aware the season finale at the end of it all is pretty unanimously considered to be pretty bad. Despite that though, the show itself had a decent run and boasts some memorable episodes along the way. If you’re looking for characters you can get behind, this one may be worth a shout.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Similarities – Action, Characters & Blended Magic & Science

Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance is a one-season wonder and a real fantasy gem. Although you don’t need to have watched the original film to understand what’s going on here, it’s definitely rewarding to do so. The story begins with castle guard Rian stumbling upon a dark secret held by the Skeksis and finds himself on the run. Meanwhile, intelligent Princess Brea is given a prophetic message, leading her to uncover secrets of her own in her home, Ha’Rar. The third character, Deet, teams up with the hilarious Podling Hup and sets out on a mission too. With all three Gelfing embarking on their quests, the Skeksis launch a crusade to harness the crystal’s power, eventually seeing them turn their bird-like eyes toward the Gelfling to sustain their life-force. Spread across 10 episodes and utilizing an abundance of practical effects, puppets and wondrous storytelling, Age Of Resistance is the perfect accompanying piece to the original film. Dark Crystal is a must-watch fantasy series. You can read our thoughts on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance in our full season reviews here!
