If you’re like us and binged-watched this supernatural drama over the weekend, you may be wondering if this one’s been renewed or cancelled.
What is First Kill Season 1 about?
First Kill is a teen drama based on the YA short story by V. E. Schwab and inspired by the famous story of Romeo and Juliet. The show follows two families. There’s the Fairmonts, who are an esteemed family among Legacy vampires. And there’s the Burns, who come from a Guild dedicated to hunting monsters like the Fairmonts. Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Calliope (Imani Lewis) come from warring families, but falling in love puts a little hitch in their plans to kill each other. We have extensive coverage of First Kill on the site, including episode recaps and an ending explained. Feel free to check those out!
Has First Kill been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, Netflix has not renewed First Kill for season 2. Considering how season 1 ended, many were hopeful for a sequel but alas, that will not happen. According to Deadline, First Kill has been officially cancelled and axed at Netflix.
Why was First Kill cancelled?
It’s tricky to say for sure but most of Netflix’s big metrics rely on completion of episodes and the number of hours watched. First Kill actually hit Netflix’s Top 10 within its first three days of release with 30.3M hours viewed. However, according to sources the drop-off rate was pretty big and it just didn’t have the same staying power as many of Netflix’s other hits. Teen series are always tricky to get right and land successive seasons and it appears that a lack of completed episodes and a high drop-off rate have contributed toward First Kill’s cancellation. Unless another studio picks this one up, it seems like these teen vamps are done! Would you have liked to see First Kill return for a second season? Or do you think this vampire series lacked bite?
