1st January
Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)
In this second cinematic spin-off of the popular TV series, the Crawley family head off to the South of France to learn more about the Dowager Countess’s mysterious past. Meanwhile, the remaining residents of Downton Abbey have to contend with the cast and crew of a motion picture studio who have descended on the house for location shooting.
Romantic Getaway: Season 1 (Sky Comedy)
This new comedy series stars Romesh Ranganathan and Katherine Ryan as a married couple who are desperate to have a child. When they run out of money after paying for countless IVF treatments, they improve their financial situation by defrauding their dodgy boss (Johnny Vegas) of £500k. Unfortunately, the actions of these unlikely criminals have serious consequences as it’s not long before they are drawn into the criminal underbelly of their town.
4th January
Hold The Front Page: Season 1 (Sky Max)
In this 6-week series, Comedians Josh Widdicombe and Nish Kumar travel around the UK in search of meaningful news stories for the various regional newspapers that they have been ‘hired’ to work for.
6th January
Operation Mincemeat (2021)
Colin Firth and Matthew Macfayden star in this true-life World War 2 drama about two intelligence officers who undertake an audacious mission to foil Nazi plans and avert a massacre.
7th January
Crimes Of The Future (2022)
David Cronenberg returns to the body horror genre with this future-set tale about two performance artists who take advantage of a syndrome that allows the human body to undergo strange mutations. Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux are among the cast of this bizarre sci-fi-drama.
8th January
The Last Son (2021)
This 19th-century set-tale stars Avatar actor Sam Worthington as Isaac LeMay, an outlaw who has been cursed by a terrible prophecy. This prophecy involves his children, one of whom is destined to kill him, so to save his own skin, he decides to hunt down his offspring.
Spector (Sky Documentaries)
This 4-part documentary explores the life of legendary music producer Phil Spector and his suspected involvement in the murder of Lana Clarkson, who was found dead in his mansion during the early hours of February 3rd, 2003.
10th January
Reginald The Vampire: Season 1 (Sky Sci-Fi)
In this entertaining new comedy series that is based on a series of popular novels, Jacob Batalon (Peter Parker’s best friend Ned in the MCU), stars as the titular vampire who discovers his undead life is just as complicated as the life he led before he was turned into a bloodsucker.
13th January
The Estate (2022)
Sisters and business partners Macy and Savannah are struggling to keep their business afloat. But when they learn their estranged wealthy aunt has terminal cancer, they try to win her over in the hopes of becoming beneficiaries of her estate. Unfortunately, they aren’t the only ones with their eyes on the old lady’s fortune as their cousins have the same ideas that they do. Toni Colette and Anna Faris take the lead roles in this dark comedy.
14th January
One Way (2022)
In this crime thriller, Colson Baker stars as Freddy, a petty criminal who finds himself in a whole heap of trouble after stealing money from a local mob boss (Drea De Matteo). In way over his head and injured pretty badly, Freddy manages to take refuge on a bus heading to Georgia but as he is badly in need of a blood transfusion, there is a chance that he won’t make it to his destination alive!
15th January
Eiffel (2021)
In 1800s Paris, the government asks Gustave Eiffel (Romain Duris) to design something spectacular for the 1899 Paris World Fair. He decides to create a tower in the heart of Paris but his creative processes are interrupted when his long-lost lover (Emma Mackey) comes back into his life. This romantic drama is ‘inspired by’ rather than directly based on the true story of the world-famous engineer.
16th January
The Last Of Us: Season 1 (Sky Atlantic)
Based on the critically acclaimed video game series of the same name, this apocalyptic thriller stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, a hardened survivor who is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of a quarantine zone. This small job turns into something much more epic in scale for this unlikely pairing as Joel discovers Ella could be mankind’s last hope against the plant-based disease that has turned much of the population into zombie-like mutants.
20th January
The Hanging Sun (2022)
Based on the 2015 novel Midnight Sun by Jo Nesbø, this crime drama stars Alessandro Borghi as a hitman on the run from his powerful crime lord father. After taking refuge in an isolated village, he grows close to Lea (Jessica Brown Findlay), a woman with a mysterious past.
21st January
Ride The Eagle (2021)
When his estranged mother Honey (Susan Sarandon) dies, Leif (Jake Johnson), a perpetual slacker, has to complete an elaborate (and dubious) to-do list in order to inherit her picturesque Yosemite cabin. JK Simmons also stars in this low-key comedy-drama.
22nd January
Alice (2022)
Alice (Keke Palmer) is an enslaved woman on a rural Georgia plantation. She thinks she is living through the Antebellum period in the 1800s but the year is actually 1973, which she quickly discovers after escaping from her ‘owner’ (Johnny Lee Miller). Free of her bondage, she vows to release the other plantation captives from the cruel man who kept her as a slave. Disturbingly, this is based on a true story.
27th January
Jurassic World: Dominion (2022)
The sixth entry in the Jurassic saga brings the ‘Park’ and ‘World’ generations together for another thrilling adventure. This isn’t the best movie within the franchise but there are some exciting setpieces, and if you have missed seeing Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum in their respective roles, you might enjoy this one for its nostalgic value.
28th January
Dear Elizabeth (2020)
Veep actor Tony Hale stars as Sid Straw, an ordinary guy who once knew actress Elizabeth Banks at college. After discovering social media for the first time, he uses it to try and contact her in an attempt to prove to the people around him that he was friends with her back in the day. But with each unanswered post, he gets dangerously close to cyber stalking!
29th January
Big Gold Brick (2022)
After he is hit by a car, fledgeling writer Samuel ( Emory Cohen) wakes up in the hospital and comes face to face with Floyd (Andy Garcia), the driver who caused the accident. By way of apology, Floyd hires Samuel to write his autobiography, but this apparently agreeable arrangement is not what it seems. Megan Fox and Oscar Isacc also star in this poorly-received comedy.
