Sky and Now TV subscribers have much to look forward to in April, as the following list demonstrates. Have a look below and make a note of those movies and TV shows that suit your particular tastes. Please note: these dates and titles are correct at the time of writing. Keep checking back in for any changes.
April 1st
The Many Saints of Newark (2021) If you were a fan of the classic show The Sopranos, you will want to give this one a watch. Sadly, the series star James Gandolfini is no longer with us, but his acting legacy continues via his son Michael who stars as the young Tony Soprano. Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, and Jon Bernthal also star in this prologue to the original television crime drama.
April 2nd
Spirit Untamed (2021) After Spirit: Stallion Of the Cimarron and the Netflix show Spirit Riding Free comes the next chapter in the ‘Spirit’ franchise. As it comes from the Dreamworks Animation studios, you can be guaranteed a good looking film. But as this is probably one for the junior members in your household, you might want to busy yourself elsewhere when the kids settle down to watch it.
April 3rd
Barbarians (2021) Things go from bad to worse for the friends celebrating a birthday party at an idyllic house in the country. Not only do unspoken secrets threaten to cause a rift between them but they have to contend with unwelcome visitors too. Iwan Rheon and Tom Cullen star in this home invasion-type thriller and it’s as unsettling as you might expect.
April 5th
Wellington Paranormal: Season 4 (2021) The final season of the Jermaine Clement/Taika Waititi co-created mockumentary about two cops who tackle strange paranormal events in New Zealand’s capital city. Demon possessions, haunted houses, and alien sightings are just a few of the things the intrepid pair have to deal with, so don’t expect your run-of-the-mill murder cases and bank robberies here.
April 6th
Raised By Wolves: Season 2 This epic sci-fi drama from executive producer Ridley Scott had a strong first season so it’s worth catching if you haven’t already. As the second season begins, android partners Mother and Father have left the desert setting of the first season and taken up residence in a mysterious tropical zone with their six human children.
April 8th
Antlers (2021) A young boy discovers a legendary ancestral creature in the woods in this atmospheric chiller from Sinister director Scott Cooper. It scored well with most critics so is well worth a look. Kerri Russell and Jesse Plemons also star in this supernatural tale that was produced by another legendary creature: Guillermo Del Toro!
April 9th
The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021) Tim and Ted are now all grown up but they have another ‘boss baby’ to contend with in the form of Tina, Tim’s daughter. This sequel is meant to be better and funnier than the first film so it could be ideal for family movie night. Whether or not it can teach your kids entrepreneurial skills is open to debate, however!
April 12th
Julia (2022) Sarah Lancashire stars as famous American cook and television personality Julia Childs in this limited series. You may already be familiar with the cooking celebrity as the 2009 film Julia and Julia gave us a brief look at the culinary legend’s life. This promises to go deeper than one of her pie fillings as it will supposedly serve up fresh insights into both her married and professional life.
April 15th
Dune (2021) This critically acclaimed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel scored big at this year’s Oscars. It’s one of the biggest science-fiction movies of recent years although those expecting Star Wars-level thrills might be disappointed. This isn’t to say it’s not worth a watch as visually, the film is absolutely stunning. The story is good too, albeit a little plot-heavy. Das Boot: Season 3 (2022) The continuing adventures of the inexperienced young U-boat crew who have to survive secret missions during the second world war. This German series has scored well with the critics so if you’re looking for something to rinse away the sand that Dune leaves behind, you might want to dive into this one!
April 16th
Paw Patrol: The Movie (2021) One of the greatest movies of all time…are words only the very youngest members of your family are likely to repeat. This is a spin-off of the popular kid’s TV show and is a must-watch if you’re 5 years old!
April 22nd
Stillwater (2021) Matt Damon stars in this crime drama about an Oklahoman man who travels to Marseilles, France to visit his daughter (Abigail Breslin) who is in prison for a crime she allegedly didn’t commit. The film is loosely inspired by the Amanda Knox case, where the accused was convicted of the murder of her roommate. The reviews for this were middling but as Damon is always worth watching, you might still want to give this one a go.
The Rising: Season 1 (2022) When Neve Kelly discovers she is dead, she uses her newfound supernatural abilities to investigate the reasons behind her demise. This is an adaptation of a Belgian crime thriller and while it sounds quite hokey, the trailer seems to suggest something dark and intelligent.
April 23rd
Moonshot (2022) Not to be confused with Moonfall, the recent sci-fi disaster movie from Roland Emmerich, this is a comedy about a man (Cole Sprouse) who illegally sneaks on board a space shuttle to Mars. He’s not the only stowaway, as he is joined by college student Sophie who wants to fly across the stars to visit her boyfriend on the Red Planet. Reviews are thin on the ground at the time of writing so it’s impossible to say how good or bad this will be. Still, it can’t be any worse than Moonfall!
April 26th
Right To Fight (2022) Documentary about several pioneering female boxers who defied sexism and racism to earn their place to fight in the ring in 70s New York. Fans of boxing may be interested in this but as it deals with prejudice and gender equality, it will appeal to more than just lovers of the sport.
April 29th
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) The critics weren’t kind about the original Venom movie but I thought they were overly harsh. Unfortunately, I am in agreement with the critics this time around as this sequel is pretty dire. Tom Hardy is still enjoyable to watch as both Eddie Brock and his symbiote alter ego but as the film completely wastes the character of Carnage (Woody Harrelson), it has to count as a misfire.
