Portrayals of Poe often struggle to separate the man from the narrators in his poems and detective stories. The Pale Blue Eye is no different, dropping Henry Melling’s Poe into a detective story of his own. The mystery unfolds when widower Detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) is summoned to West Point to investigate a gruesome act at the academy. Not only did they discover one of their own cadets hanging from a tree; the heart was later cut out and stolen from the cadaver....

A sea-faring adventure lacking spark The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure is a simple, sea-faring adventure movie that lacks ambition. With a barebones story, weak characterization and hit or miss comedy, the film lives and dies by its action – and how much tolerance you have to wait for the next one to appear on-screen. The Last Royal Treasure isn’t particularly deep and doesn’t really have any twists either, making for a somewhat mellow and underwhelming watch at times....

For Better or Worse Episode 6 of The Resident season 6 starts with Kit and Randolph at their wedding rehearsal. She is interrupted by a call from the governor’s office. She is hoping they are calling to set a meeting to discuss the financial future of the hospital. Unfortunately, they called to tell her that the governor is unavailable. Kit fears that he doesn’t want to meet with her because he is planning to slash funding to public hospitals like Chastain....

In the morning, Simone wakes up to find her old nemesis, Greg, in her house. Her dad, Cutty hired him to help him with his business accounts. As they tease and flirt with each other, she gets a call from her boss asking her to go to the forest for their case. A man is missing and Garza is doing a favour for “Senator Smith” by investigating the missing case of Wallace....

We return to the castle to find the King still mourning deeply, a month after his wife’s death....

Hard Truths Based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, The Stranger gets off to an intriguing start here, one that looks set for a twisty-turny 8 episode thriller and immediately asks plenty of questions right out of the gate. While there is an element of disbelief with a couple of plot elements, for the most part these are easy to overlook as the story continues tumbling down the rabbit-hole during this episode and ends things on a very tantalizing note indeed....

Summer House Episode 1 of The Summer I Turned Pretty starts with us introduced to the sun-soaked beauty of Cousin’s Beach, which plays host to number of our key characters. Courtesy of a wonderful montage, we’re introduced to our main entourage of kids – Jeremiah, Conrad, Steven and Belly – who are growing from kids into teens. It’s immediately clear that Belly has the hots for Conrad, whom she’s had a crush on since she was 12....

The Yellow Suitcase Episode 12 of The Uncanny Counter begins with Mo-Tak rushing Detective Jeong-Yeong into hospital. She’s scrambled into surgery and things look really bleak for her future. While the surgeons try to resuscitate her, we cut back in time and see Mo-Tak saying goodbye to Kim on the evening he was stabbed and thrown off the roof. Back in the present, things take a turn for the worst when he spots Jeong-Yeong’s spirit floating away....

With the setting changed to Sicily for season 2, the series takes on a slightly different edge, but it’s no less endearing and watchable! Moving The Pieces I wasn’t a fan of last week’s episode. I thought the ill-placed music and strange pacing really took the wind out of Titan’s sails and hoped this was simply a blip to get back on track this week. While the lack of Deathstroke and Kory is a bit of a disappointment, Titans returns for a much more driven episode this time around, one that works to move the pieces but fails to progress the main plot of the series....
