A woeful home invasion film Shudder’s new home invasion/murder mystery is drab. There are no two ways about it. When the casting and plot brief were announced, it promised a taut thriller with minimal exposition and optimal drama. Single-location settings are powerful tools that when wielded properly, can benefit in more than one way. But for Alison Locke – who writes and directs – it becomes a burden. The lack of energy in the first half, and motivation in the second, never allows us to rationalize her story, despite a decent turn by both Anna Gunn and Linus Roache....

I Want You Back Episode 1 of The Big Leap begins with a flashback to seven years ago. Gabby Lewis helps to choregraph a dance with her very-obviously-gay boyfriend, Justin. She informs Diana of the harm she has done. Diana read the note, and she experiences a sense of closure. When the Princess realizes it was done, she experiences an intense wave of sadness. Sadly, she is continuously pursued by journalists at every turn, so her popularity is not reduced after all....

The Descent VS Aliens If you’ve played any of the entries in The Dark Pictures Anthology, House of Ashes should come as absolutely no surprise. The latest Supermassive title is, in its simplest form, a riff on both Aliens and The Descent. The surprising part here though comes from how well it works. While the game suffers from a contrived ending and thin characterization for half its cast, this rip-roaring adventure leans much harder into thriller territory than past entries – and it’s all the stronger for it....

The Bomb Episode 2 of The Devil Judge begins with Ga-On troubled over Yo-Han’s conflicting emotions. After the trial, Yo-Han invites Ga-On and Jin-Joo out for dinner. Ga-On challenges his ideals that night, claiming he’s been a pampered prince since birth. Well, Yo-Han outright admits that his Father was a loan shark – and Ga-On has a history of borrowing money. Eventually it’s too much for Ga-On to take and he walks away....

Falling Episode 3 of The Essex Serpent starts with fishermen out on the sea. Eerie noises crescendo into the vessel being hit by something underneath, as we see a dark outline appear under the boat, courtesy of a slick overhead shot. One of the fishermen, Joshua, falls out and almost gets pulled under. Although he scrambles back aboard, it’s yet another ominous sign that this serpent could actually be real. Cora continues to reel over what happened in the school....
