Despite retreading an all too familiar plotline, Doctor Strange is aesthetically one of the best looking Marvel films, with a clever use of psychedelic scenes that spill over to the well choreographed fights. The villain is handled in a clever, out-of-the-box way and manages to feel original enough to somewhat forgive the formulaic plot. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) begins as a brilliant neurosurgeon who can do no wrong. That is, until he’s involved in a horrific car accident that leaves him unable to use his hands....

Season 12 Is A Nightmare We’re back with another slice of Doctor Who and this week is certainly an improvement over last week but also shows a lot of wasted potential here, with a storyline wrapped up in break-neck speed and some under-utilized ideas that could have made this a real winner with better script writing. The idea of nightmares consuming our companions, and the Doctor herself, seems like a good scope to deep dive into the psyche of these people but given the profound lack of screen time each of these have had over the past two seasons, it just highlights why three companions are far too many for the TARDIS....

Save The Cheerleader Poet, Save The World If there’s one thing Doctor Who has managed to nail this year it’s the element of unpredictability. It’s 1928 at Downton when Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith) receives some shocking news. Lady Grantham decides to leave the villa to her granddaughter Sybbie, leading Robert, Cora, and several other members of the family to meet the new Marquis in France for a discussion of the will. While the Marquis is compliant with his father’s wishes, his mother won’t give up the villa so easily....

Murder on the Dancefloor When it comes to teen dramas, Spanish melodrama Elite is one of the better options in this genre. Last season added more depth to the already entangled story, revolving around the disappearance of Samuel for much of its run-time. This time around we’ve got a new murder to worry about and this all continues to be a vast ripple effect from the original murder way back at the end of season 1....

Aarmand Island Episode 1 of Elves begins with a cow being led out into the woods. It’s reluctant, unwilling to go further, but it’s tied to a tree as a sacrifice. Strange, snarling creatures come rushing up and maul it to pieces off-screen. It’s Christmas time and we begin the series with a girl called Josefine. She’s not exactly thrilled about the prospect of a Christmas break, as she heads off with her family to the remote island of Armandso....

The same motivation courses throughout Emancipation, director Antoine Fuqua’s slavery drama starring Will Smith. Based on the true story of Gordon’s escape and his service in the Union army, the film begins on the plantation of Captain Lyons, where Peter (Smith) is enslaved with his wife Dodienne (Charmaine Bingwa) and kids. When Peter is sold to the Confederate Army for railroad work, nothing can crush his resolve to reunite with his beloved family....

Sentient I mentioned last week that Emergence has intrigued me so far and this week only further accentuates that with another solid episode, blending more questions with drip-fed answers. As Jo and Benny learn more about Piper’s origin, our AI girl begins to flex her mental muscles, leading up to a big reveal during the climax that leaves things on a very interesting and tantalizing note. While Piper tests the extent of her power at home, Jo heads out and speaks to Alan’s wife regarding Kindred....

Bubbling Emotions With every passing episode, Extraordinary You doubles down on its narrative and plot ideas whilst managing to evolve each of the characters in a way that keeps the show feeling fresh and unpredictable. This latest double bill of episodes is arguably the strongest of the season too, with some thought provoking ideas about whether the story is cyclical and continued tensions between Dan-O and Kyung. After his encounter with Ha-Roo last time out, the episode begins with Kyung storming off angrily before coming across burnt pages of the book Jimmiche tried so hard to destroy....

Lay Away Episode 7 of Fargo Season 4 begins with Oraetta baking another deliciously deadly treat – this time for Dr Harvard. As he takes a bite, the man immediately writhes in pain and struggles to breathe. This gives Oraetta time to check Harvard’s office and find the note addressed from “a concerned citizen.” Snatching the note up, she looks over the pained doctor as a slick red filter bleeds into the camera (the angel of death anyone?...

Episode 2 of Farzar begins with Barry trying to save it. He isn’t able to and Scootie is finally a robot. Renzo is very proud of Fichael for bringing him Bazarack’s head. It is displayed on the wall like a souvenir from a trip. Fichael tries to talk to Renzo about his treatment of the aliens but Renzo quickly creates a diversion by putting Fichael in charge of the BS meter....

On this occasion, he wins and with the game, the right to ask Renzo to complete any one wish of it. Wendigo wins because Fichael suddenly pops up from his seat and goes on the field to play for the blue team. In his childhood memories, head always played ball with his father and hence he thought he was great at it. At the hospital, we learn the truth. Renzo had actually asked Barry to insert memories into Fichael’s head using a memory gun....

Taken By The Wind Episode 2 of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 starts with Terra out in the woods, picking mushrooms. She’s alone, and as we discovered last episode, that’s not necessarily a good thing. Terra senses there’s something amiss and conjures forth her vines. However, those vines suddenly sprout flowers… and out steps Flora. Flora heads back to the academy with her friend, where she learns that Rosalind is now in charge and there are big changes afoot....

The Writing On The Trees After last week’s stylish bottle episode, Fear The Walking Dead returns this week with more characterisation and plot progression, with a pretty good episode, despite some illogical character choices. Sensing the group is far too big to effectively portray them all, Fear takes a clever approach with its latest episode, condensing down the group to a handful of survivors, allowing for more concise character arcs....

The others have suffered immensely but in order to survive, the group band together and decide to try and take Strand’s Tower by force, determined to continue looking for Padre, a mythical place no one is sure exists. Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) is now the leader to Teddy (John Glover)’s followers but also consumed by a mysterious illness and the repercussions of her actions. Meanwhile, Morgan (Lennie James) maintains hope of being reunited with his family....

Flames Of Madness There’s an awful lot going on in Fire Force Episode 2 and if season 2 keeps up at this frenetic pace, it could offset some of the good work we’ve seen so far. Despite its problems, the episode does start to move the main plot line along nicely while allowing some decent action to seep through too. The episode itself begins not long after the successful mission involving the nude calendar....

Cal’s parents stake Margot and Sebastian with silver-tipped spears, but they don’t die. None of the Legacy Vampires do, in fact. Juliette breaks away from her siblings when she hears Cal screaming. She frees Cal, who knocks Cook to the ground, killing him. They take Cook’s body to Ben’s place to ask for his help. But when they get there, they find Cook has disappeared. Cook then appears out of nowhere and attacks Ben....
