Australian band Parkway Drive has broken the latch to worldwide stardom, and they’ve overcome adversity as well as putting metal music in the mix with those pop bands. Metal music now has a voice of reason, and we know there are bands that did the same thing in the 80’s and 90’s, such as Metallica and Anthrax, but for the modern era. Bands like Parkway Drive and Killswitch Engage carry the golden tickets. Parkway Drive is a driven colossus, and a band with such commendable talent. Yes, their music isn’t for everyone, and it isn’t suited to the common music lover, as it can be ruthless and unorthodox. It is music which carries an enormous weight, and it has the sound of crashing waves and thunder. The rip-roaring riffs are flawless and seamless too, and on Darker Still they’ve been elevated to an almighty standard. Lead singer Winston McCall doesn’t flap around, and he doesn’t try to be someone he’s not. As on these tracks he spills all, and his composure is astounding. On Darker Still his writing ability fully shines, and the lyrical quality has been painstakingly instilled. And there are 11 songs on this LP. ‘Glitch’ is loud with technical guitar parts and McCall’s thunderous vocals. The lyrics explain sleep deprivation and fear. ‘Imperial Heretic’ meanwhile, builds up into a frenzy. The guitar parts are seamless here, and the technical ability should be applauded. McCall sings about spilled blood and prophets, and he’s on a mission to drum the music into the minds. ‘Land Of The Lost’ then steers the music up a notch, and the guitar work is superb here. McCall also searches for solace in a frantic place. Parkway Drive tells us about their woes through the most epic of records. Their hearts are clearly in it, and their statements will not fizzle away.
