Hair
Episode 3 of Servant Season 3 begins with Julian waking from a horrific dream. Within his nightmarish visions, he sees Dorothy dead and unceremoniously vomits over the balcony. Is this a premonition of things to come? Well, either way he heads over to the Turner household with renewed vigor, determined to solve this mystery once and for all. While Dorothy busies herself with work, prepping for a Marilyn Monroe lookalike contest, Julian approaches Sean with an idea. He wants to do a DNA test on Jericho and decides to use Leanne’s DNA alongside Jericho’s, believing she’s the real mother. Sean shoots down the idea though, instead helping Leanne to conquer her fears of the outside world and going for a stroll through the park. It doesn’t last long though as once again Leanne becomes spooked and forces them to head home. Julian remains undeterred in his mission and for old times sake, has Roscoe call in some favours for him. And while he does that, Julian snoops about to get DNA from both Leanne and Jericho. It doesn’t go to plan though, eventually leading to Julian finding Dorothy’s hair as a back-up plan on her hairbrush. After all, if that comes up as a negative match then it would indirectly show that Leanne could be Jericho’s mother. Meanwhile, Dorothy decides to shoot a new story out in the park after the Marilyn Monroe gig goes awry. Specifically, she settles on filming squatters in the park whom Sean has started feeding. Dorothy senses a PR opportunity and ends up interviewing her husband, disguising their relationship with the tagline of “local man.” Elsewhere, Julian receives the news back from the DNA test. Sitting down with Dorothy that night, he grits his teeth and admits the truth about the DNA test – Jericho isn’t hers. Only… that’s not true. It turns out Julian used the wrong hairbrush and it’s actually a brush belonging to one of Dorothy’s friends, Lucy. As the episode closes out, we cut upstairs to Leanne. She looks out the window and notices three of the squatters looking up at her in the window.
The Episode Review
Wow that was a monumental waste of time. Beyond the final 30 seconds or so, this entire episode felt like a filler. We get Julian snooping for DNA and then testing it… only to find out he never actually got the right DNA in the first place. The whole episode shows us absolutely nothing beyond that the squatters outside could be part of the cult. Then again, they may not be. Beyond that, this entire 30 minute chapter does nothing to develop either the characters or the plot. There’s no horror, no mystery and barely any noteworthy drama either. Servant is certainly dragging its heels through this chapter and after last week’s enjoyable but relatively subdued chapter, we’re back to the tepid mediocre rocking of last season’s humdrum. Hopefully the upcoming chapters can pick things up because compared to season 1, this show is a far cry from that creepy level.
