If you have seen and enjoyed Slumberland, you may be interested in a sequel. But will there be a Slumberland 2? Or will Netflix fail to make your sequel dreams come true? Here’s what we know at the time of writing:
What is Slumberland about?
Slumberland is essentially a story about grief but wrapped around this is a fantasy plot about Nemo (Marlow Barkley), a young girl who enters the dream world of Slumberland in the hope that she might get the opportunity to see her late father again. As she travels through the world of dreams, she is escorted on her quest by Flip (Jason Momoa), a lovable outlaw who, for reasons that eventually become clear, hasn’t been able to leave Slumberland. Does Nemo find her father? Will there be a Slumberland 2?
Currently, there is no confirmation of Slumberland 2 from Netflix so we don’t know if a sequel will eventually happen. But as Slumberland is a pretty big deal for the streaming studio, as evidenced by the film’s $150 million budget, there is a chance that this could become the first of a franchise if it strikes a chord with audiences and encourages subscription renewals. As the film is based on a long-running comic strip, Little Nemo in Slumberland, there is certainly scope for further stories, though it’s important to note that the first film is only loosely based on the original work of fiction. The sequel could have a bigger connection to the comic strip or it could be another film that is loosely inspired by one of the tales from the source material. For now, we will just have to wait and see. But as there is potential for a sequel, we think Slumberland 2 will probably happen at some point in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future.
What could the plotline be in Slumberland 2?
Slumberland‘s story is wrapped up in the first film so there is a chance that it won’t continue the adventures of Nemo. However, other characters could enter the dream world to embark on quests on their own, so there is a chance that the sequel will focus on a new protagonist. As the world of dreams can be as big as one’s imagination, there will be no shortage of possibilities if Slumberland 2’s creators can come up with some fantastical ideas. If the film does focus on Nemo, it might be that we meet her again as an adult. If she has lost connection with the childlike wonderment that allowed her to enter the world of Slumberland, the plotline could revolve around her finding that sense of magic again and returning to the land of dreams. Who could be in Slumberland 2?
Marlow Barkley is likely to return if the storyline is a continuation of her adventures as a child but as the film’s writers could time jump into the future, we might see another actress in her role. Of course, even if an older actress does play the adult Nemo, there is the chance that Barkley could still return to the role if the character dreams of her younger self. Such an event happens in the first film when a man dreams of himself as a baby so there is potential for this to happen. Jason Momoa could also return as Flip but this will be dependent on how the writers interpret his story and his connection to Phillip (Chris O’Dowd), Nemo’s uncle. One actress we are likely to see again is Weruche Opia. She stars as Agent Green in the first film, an agent from the Bureau of Subconscious Activities, who tries to restore order to the world of dreams. If events disrupt the world of Slumberland again, she will probably be called back into action to fix whatever chaos has been caused.
When could Slumberland 2 be released?
If the sequel is given the green light in the next few months, there is a chance that Slumberland 2 could be released in the final quarter of 2024. But this may be dependent on whether or not Francis Lawrence returns to direct the movie. He is currently busy with a prequel to The Hunger Games and his name has been attached to the video game adaptation Bioshock and Constantine 2. As such, we might have to wait a little longer for the sequel if he returns to direct it.
