But will we see The Batman 2? Or have the chances of a follow-up movie been thwarted by a studio villain? Here’s what we know at the time of writing:
What is The Batman about?
The first movie was set two years into Bruce Wayne’s campaign against the dastardly denizens of Gotham City and it charted his attempts to take down the puzzle-obsessed serial killer known as The Riddler. Does he succeed in his mission? There will be no spoilers here just in case you haven’t yet seen the movie but if you would like to know more about The Batman, please check out our Review and Ending Explained articles which go into a lot more detail.
Will we get to see The Batman 2?
Yes! Warner Bros has confirmed The Batman 2 is in production but if you’re hoping to see the movie any time soon, you’re going to be disappointed. Matt Reeves is returning as director and Robert Pattinson will once again don Batman’s famous mask but while the pair are teaming up once more to bring the DC hero to life, Variety has suggested the movie won’t be in theatres until 2025 at the earliest.
Who will be the main villain in The Batman 2?
Plot details are under wraps at the moment but it could be assumed that the Joker will be the main villain of the sequel as he made a brief appearance in a scene set within Arkham Asylum at the end of the first movie. Reeves hasn’t confirmed this though and he has said in interviews that Joker’s appearance wasn’t the setup for a sequel, so we shouldn’t get our hopes up. If we don’t get to see the Clown Prince of Crime in the sequel, the screenwriters could surprise us with a villain who has never been featured in a Batman movie before, such as Clayface, Solomon Grundy, or Deathstroke. Alternatively, we could see a new take on a villain we have seen in movies past, such as Bane, the super-pumped villain who uses a similar drug to the one Batman was seen using in the recent movie to give him his muscled strength. Another villain – or rather anti-hero – that we are likely to see is Catwoman. She had an important part to play in The Batman and while she and Bruce parted company at the end of the movie, there is a good chance that she will make a return in the sequel. Colin Farrell could return as Penguin too and it might be that he has a bigger role to play in the next movie. These are just speculations but if you would like to see a particular villain, let us know your top pick for the baddie Batman takes on in his next adventure.
Who could be in The Batman 2?
Robert Pattinson’s return is a given and we expect to see Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright again as Alfred and Jim Gordon respectively. If the Joker does appear in the new movie, we might see Barry Keoghan back in the role. In an interview with Deadline, he said he was ready to resume the part “as soon as that call comes” so here’s hoping he gets the opportunity. Zoe Kravitz will likely resume her role as Catwoman if the story allows her to return and we might see also Colin Farrell as Penguin again, provided he has the stamina to undergo all of that prosthetic work.
Is there a trailer for The Batman 2?
